Her entire journey is made to find and rescue her little brother Sammy. Throughout the entire story, she never once gives into depression, loneliness, or hopelessness. Cassie is also extremely driven and strong. She never wanted to be a cold-hearted killer but the unbelievable circumstances she was in made it understandable. She knows that she has changed and that it was the only way to survive. This change resulted in a person vs self conflict. As soon as the waves began, she slowly developed the need to survive in this bizarre reality. She went to school, and led a normal life. She used to be a sweet, innocent, Daddy's girl. In the early pages of the novel, Cassie says she changed. Being a survivor turned her into a killer. If survivors want to survive, they have to kill. That helps her in some ways, but also makes her person vs self conflicts worsen. That is the one word that I would use to describe her. Cassie Sullivan is the protagonist of The 5th Wave and proves again and again that she is a survivor.
